Natural phenolic molecule derived from guaiacol found in several plants such as cinnamon, cloves and bay leaves. It has been used as a topical anti-irritant antiseptic and in dental preparations with zinc oxide to seal the root canal and control pain.

Eugenol has anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antipyretic, antioxidant, antifungal and analgesic properties. Its exact mechanism of action is not known, however, it has been shown to interfere with the conduction of the action potential.
